The July 2020 Edition of ILEPI’s newsletter, Illinois Insights, has been released.
The Illinois Economic Policy Institute (ILEPI) has released the July 2020 Edition of our quarterly newsletter, Illinois Insights. This edition is, once again, primarily about the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Essential and face-to-face workers who were most affected by the state’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic also have lower wages, suffer from higher job volatility, and are more likely to be people of color. Due to the surge of unemployment claims during the pandemic, upwards of 545,000 Illinois workers likely lost their employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. We also discuss the impact COVID-19 has had on the state’s infrastructure systems and revenue.
As always, we’ve updated Illinois’ economic indicators. Illinois lost over 730,000 jobs from May 2019 to May 2020. While there is hope these numbers start to improve as economies have reopened and Illinois has moved to Phase 4, the virus is around to stay and some states have reevaluated their reopening as cases have been on the rise.
